When it comes time for Amazon's Big Deal Days, we're stocking up on essentials and keeping an eye on big-ticket items that we've been waiting to go on sale. While we're always checking for discounts on toys for our kids, holiday decorating essentials, and fashion picks for ourselves, we never forget the animals in our household. Let's face it: Being a pet owner can be expensive! If we can save money on toys for our dogs or cat trees for our feline friends, we'll be adding to cart.

But, at Country Living, that also includes the feathered members of our brood. We tapped our favorite chicken keepers, from authors to homesteaders, to find out what they're shopping on Amazon's October Prime Day. They sent us their top picks for their chicks, from brooders and coop cameras to feeders to toys. We'll be updating this story with the best picks on October 8 and 9!

How to Speak Chicken author Melissa Caughey recommends this brooder, which has room for 20 newly hatched chicks. The height can be adjusted to accommodate chicks of various sizes, and the 12 volt underside provides even radiant heat.

Author and fifth-generation chicken keeper Lisa Steele recommends this automatic incubator. She says, "Brinsea incubators are the only brand I trust my hatching eggs to. I've had many, many successful hatches over the last decade using my Brinsea Mini Advance. With clear instructions and controls so you 'set it and forget it,' you'll have great hatch rates with your Brinsea."

Alysha Whitfield, founder of Bee Jeweled Coop, explains, "These are perfect to keep predators out (even raccoons, who are smart and can figure out some locks!) but are super easy to unlock with one hand, making access for humans quick and simple."

This coop gives your chickens room to roam at 87" x 41". It's lightweight and can easily be repositioned. It has a waterproof cover on one end to give a bit of protection from sun and rain.

Tove Danovich, chicken owner and author of Under the Henfluence, recommends this helpful gadget. She says, "I *love* this Run Chicken automatic coop door. It's easy to install and easy to set up and the battery lasts forever. I set it so it opened just before sunrise and closed after the sun went down (no need to reprogram it as the days get longer or shorter). It kept the coop cozy and draft-free on cold days and saved me a lot of time. No need to put your robe on first thing in the morning to let the ladies out. It comes in different colors but I went with the eye-catching red."

She shared a video of it in action on her Instagram page.

Alysha Whitfield, who invented the Coop Scoop (due out later this year), recommends this feeder. She says, "This helps with rodent-proofing your coop, is water-resistant, and helps prevent feed spillage!"

Lisa Steele of Fresh Eggs Daily says, "I crush eggshells and feed them back to my laying hens as an added calcium supplement, but I always like to keep a small dish of oyster shell as a backup, just in case. I've tried other brands, but this Small Pet Select Oyster Shell is the hands-down favorite of my flock. And I feel good knowing that everyone is getting all the calcium they need."

Melissa Caughey of Tilly's Nest counts this brooder box among her chicken-keeping must-haves. The enclosure provides room for your chicks to grow in a safe open-air environment.

Lisa Steele says, "I started tossing dried and fresh herbs in my hens' nesting boxes because they looked pretty, smelled nice, and helped to deter pests from moving into the coop. My hens seemed to enjoy the natural aromatherapy, so I developed my nesting herb product called Coop Confetti with rose petals, lavender, mint and marigolds so everyone can pretty up their coop a bit."

Raising chickens is a messy business. Melissa Caughey, author, Master Gardener, and chicken keeper, counts a wet/dry vac among her essentials tools for keeping her coop tidy.

Keep your chickens entertained and stimulated with this four-piece set of toys, recommended by Melissa Caughey. It includes a xylophone toy, two veggie skewers, and a vegetable string bags.

Lauren Allen (owner of the most darling chicken coop we've ever seen) recommends this waterer. The compact device holds two gallons of water. It has two fill cups that remain half-filled, to make sure your chickens have plenty of fresh water.

Lauren Allen, who chronicles her chicken-keeping adventures on Trying to Homestead, recommends these nesting pads. Made from 100% sustainably harvested aspen excelsior, they're designed to keep your hens comfortable and minimize breakage.

Author Melissa Caughey takes the knowledge from her best-selling book to the wall with this calendar. It's a daily reminder of the intelligence of our favorite feathered friends, paired with beautiful portraits. The calendar makes a great gift for your favorite chicken keeper.

Tove Danovich reports on her personal experience keeping chickens and explores the stories of kindred spirits who love their feathered flocks.

This fun perch is the top-seller in our gift guide for chicken owners. No chicken coop is complete without a cute and colorful swing for the chickens. Your flock will love playing on this natural wood version that is accented with colorful (and non-toxic) beads.
